iPhone 3G

I stood in line ~7 hours on iPhone 3G day for my shiny new 16 GB iPhone 3G, but forgot all about the pictures of the unboxing. It’s a shame, because I’m sure I was part of a very small group of people who were allowed to leave the store without activating/opening the iPhone.

Now I can wrote posts directly from my iPhone.

Too bad there’s no copy and paste for those long and annoying URLs and images I like to post.

App Store has landed

Since the iTunes 7.7 update was released tonight and since I had nothing else to do, I went around and searched for an application from the iTunes App Store.

Below are screen shots of the applications I’ve already downloaded/purchased (I couldn’t resist buying Super Monkey Ball!) and the general landing page on iTunes.

Now, a list of several iTunes links to the various App Store categories, shamelessly grabbed from MacRumors.

Really, AT&T? (updated)

While browsing AT&T’s website trying to find more information about the new $30 iPhone data plan (some sites are reporting that AT&T removed the 200 SMS messages), I came across the “AT&T Coverage Viewer” and decided to see just how much AT&T had expanded its 3G coverage.

I really wish I hadn’t. As the screen shot below shows, AT&T’s 3G service ends about 100 feet from my house (the pin on the map).

Really, AT&T?

What’s even more annoying is that the 3G “deadzone” extends until the very end of my neighborhood. By about another 200 feet. In fact, my neighborhood is the only inhabited area within a 5 mile radius that isn’t covered by 3G.

Really, AT&T?

I’m going to be quite angry if AT&T makes me pay an extra $10 (above the old $20) for a faster data network that I won’t even be able to use. Thankfully, the iPhone can still fall back to EDGE when not in a 3G area.

Update: It looks like Fullerton and Brea (where I spend most of my non-summer time) are fully covered, a small consolation.

Really, AT&T?

iPhone 3G

Apple announced the iPhone 3G at WWDC today, and it has everything that I had asked for.

  • 3G
  • GPS
  • Better battery life
  • Less expensive (8GB $199, 16GB $299)

iPhone 3G, glossy black or white

The all-plastic phone is also now available in two colors, glossy black or white. Personally, the black looks very very appealing. There’s no doubt where I’ll be the night of July 11th.

We’ll all have to wait until July 11th to head into a retail store to pick it up. Apple won’t be selling it on their online store, at least not until after the launch.

The July 11th launch will also host the release of iPhone firmware 2.0 and the full SDK.

Update: Here’s an ad for the iPhone 3G.
